FEEL THE HEAT! August in San Diego is definitely on the hot side, and we all want to either lounge by a pool or sit in air conditioned comfort; well this August you can do both at the first annual ImprovCon! Performances, workshops and panels will make the day (and evening!) an improv-lover’s paradise. This month also brings a new seasonal show at Mockingbird as well as some new classes and workshops. We’d also like to introduce you to a new partnership of ours and give more updates about our community!

It’s finally here: ImprovCon! The newest San Diego convention devoted to the art and business of improv. Created and coordinated by Chris “Jazz” Colthurst, this convention seeks to celebrate and elevate the art form, skill and practice dear to our hearts: Improvisational theater. Held at the famous Town and Country Resort in Mission Valley, over a thousand attendees from around the country are expected and Mockingbird Improv will be a large presence through our numerous shows and individuals in attendance.

Mockingbird shows performing at the conference include: Improv VS Standup, Radio ‘47, Telenovela Improv and Tales From The Tavern as well as beloved independent teams such as Kid Goblin, Rat City, Noise Boiz, Project JEricah, Personality Hires, Five Guys and shows that have graced the Mockingbird stage, Inside The Improv Studio.
Jackie Bookstein will be leading a group for Expressive Arts and there will be two Free Intro workshops led by Mockingbird teachers, Jenn Wessels and Masha Ioffe plus Gary Ware will be part of a discussion about improv across generations. The theater will be closed for the evenings of August 20-22 and we encourage everyone to attend ImprovCon. The theater will reopen the evening of August 23rd for a student show. We hope to see you at the convention!

Starting Friday August 7, Jack Jernigan’s latest directorial project:
Secret Agent 5678 will take the stage for a limited run.
Secret agents silently save the world - existing on the borders of sanity and civility- leaving the innocents safely in their wake. They can dance and weave through any obstacles…except their own past.
If you dig espionage with a big dose of 1960s style, this show is for you! It is recommended to buy tix early as these seasonal shows sell out fast. You may also take a class from the director; see further down under “workshops” in this very newsletter.
Premieres Friday, August 7 and runs through September 4. Tickets

THANK YOU TO TWO DEPARTING BOARD MEMBERSOur amazing Secretary, Lesley Johnson and Treasurer, Angela Andelson (who also performs in several shows) are stepping down from their Board roles. Lesley contributed to our community by instituting and coordinating Community Meetings during her tenure and Angela took on a great deal more than your average board treasurer would, helping get us on a stable footing and for these efforts we are grateful. Thank you, both!

This year’s summer camp program was awesome! We sold out our July camp and awarded three scholarships. For parents looking for more opportunities like this, please see the interest form on our Youth Improv program page for potential programs next year, especially teen classes.

First Saturdays at 10 PM
Telenovela Improv will be preempted by Secret Agent 5678 for the month of August to return in September.
No residency show Aug 9th- instead, we present: Literajeepersonaliti - three indie teams you love.
Mockingbird closed for ImprovCon from August 20-23 (except for the student show on Sunday evening)

Mockingbird is now partnering with Vanguard Culture- if you haven’t checked them out yet, please do! They are a wonderful resource for arts related events, other nonprofit arts organizations that promote visual, musical, performing and cutting edge art in and around San Diego. The Nonprofit Arts Summit is a space where leaders can meet and share experiences and resources. Mockingbird Improv will be there! During these troubled times, the Arts get little support and it is important that we all hang together to emphasize the importance of the Arts in our daily lives.
